Yes, you can use your Commonwealth Bank Debit Mastercard abroad, both to make payments in stores and to withdraw local currency from ATMs—subject to daily limits and applicable fees.

Usage Locations

  • You can use your Debit Mastercard internationally wherever the Mastercard, Cirrus or Maestro logo is displayed.
  • Pay at millions of merchants worldwide and withdraw cash at ATMs—including in Europe, Asia, the Americas and more.
  • This includes payments online, in-store and ATM withdrawals using local currency.

Withdrawal & Spending Limits

  • Your maximum daily ATM withdrawal and point‑of‑sale spending limit is typically A$2,000 (or foreign currency equivalent), depending on when the card was issued.
  • Cards issued prior to February 2015 may have lower limits (e.g. A$1,000 in some cases). Most cards issued later have the standard A$2,000 limit per day.
  • The daily card limit applies across all linked accounts and cannot currently be increased beyond A$2,000.

Fees & Exchange Rates

  • For ATM withdrawals overseas, fees start from approximately A$5 plus a 3%–3.5% foreign transaction fee. Fee levels vary by ATM operator and country.
  • International purchases may carry a foreign transaction fee of around 3%–3.5% of the amount in AUD.
  • Currency conversion uses Mastercard’s wholesale exchange rate at the time of processing, plus CommBank’s additional fee.

Preparation Advice

  • Notify CommBank before travelling through NetBank or the CommBank app to avoid card blocks due to fraud detection.
  • Check and, if needed, temporarily adjust your daily withdrawal or spending limits via the CommBank app.
  • Keep a backup payment method such as a travel money card or separate credit card, especially in countries with limited international ATM access.
