When managing a deceased estate, it's important to understand which funeral-related expenses can be paid from the deceased's available funds. Westpac provides guidance on this matter to assist executors and next of kin during this challenging time.
Funeral Expenses Covered by the Deceased's Estate
Westpac can assist with paying for the cost of the funeral or memorial from the deceased’s accounts, provided there are sufficient funds available. This assistance is subject to all the Executors, solicitors, or next of kin agreeing and making a request for the funeral costs to be deducted from the account(s). If there are funds in the deceased's account, you can send the original tax invoice, and Westpac will make the payment on your behalf. If there aren't enough funds, Westpac will make a partial payment with the available funds and close the account(s).
Reimbursement for Funeral Expenses Already Paid
If you have already paid for funeral expenses, you can request reimbursement from the deceased's estate. To do so, you need to provide the original invoice and tax receipt, with the payee’s name clearly stated. Westpac will reimburse the payee directly. The request must be made by the authorised estate representative(s), such as the executor or next of kin.
Other Funeral-Related Costs
Westpac typically does not release funds from the deceased's account(s) to pay for additional funeral-related expenses, such as the wake, flights, or other personal costs. These expenses are generally not covered unless specifically authorised by the estate representatives and agreed upon by all parties involved.
Required Documentation
To process funeral expense payments or reimbursements, the following documents are generally required:
- Original tax invoice from the funeral director
- Proof of death document (e.g., death certificate, medical certificate)
- Completed Deceased Estate Expense Payment Request Form
- Certified copy of identification for the estate representative(s)
