Opening a joint account with Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) allows two individuals to manage shared finances, such as household expenses, bills, and savings goals. Here's how you can set up a joint account and what you need to know:

Who Can Open a Joint Account?

  • Both applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Applicants must have an Australian residential address.
  • Accounts must be opened in personal names; company, trading, or trust accounts are not eligible.

How to Apply for a Joint Account

You can apply for a joint Smart Access account in the following ways:

  • Online Application: Complete the application through NetBank or the CommBank app if you already bank with CommBank.
  • In-Branch Application: Visit a CommBank branch together to apply in person.

After applying, both applicants will need to verify their identity within 30 days. Once verified, you can start using your account immediately. Your Debit Mastercards will arrive by mail within 5 business days. In the meantime, you can use the Cardless Cash feature via the CommBank app or NetBank to access your funds.

Account Features

  • Each account holder receives a Debit Mastercard for easy access to funds.
  • Monthly account fee waived if you deposit at least $2,000 per month or if you're under 30 years old.
  • Fee-free transactions include purchases in Australia, transfers between accounts, BPAY, PayID payments, and withdrawals from CommBank ATMs.

Considerations Before Opening a Joint Account

Before opening a joint account, it's important to discuss and agree on the following:

  • Financial Contributions: Decide how much each person will contribute to the account.
  • Account Usage: Determine what the account will be used for (e.g., bills, savings, personal expenses).
  • Spending Limits: Set boundaries on spending and withdrawal limits.
  • Account Management: Agree on how the account will be managed and who will monitor transactions.

Having open and honest discussions about these aspects can help prevent misunderstandings and ensure the joint account serves both parties effectively.
